A Gem![]()
Excellent and brilliant book. I used it to successfully pass the
Dantes Money and Banking exam. Amazingly, it’s as thick as phone book,
yet very easy to read. After completing a chapter, you just long for
more. I recommend it.

Mellon: An American Life
A landmark work from one of the preeminent historians of our time: the
first published biography of Andrew W. Mellon, the American colossus
who bestrode the worlds of industry, government, and philanthropy,
leaving his transformative stamp on each.
Following a boyhood
in nineteenth-century Pittsburgh, during which he learned from his
Scotch-Irish immigrant father the lessons of self-sufficiency and
accumulation of wealth, Andrew Mellon overcame painful shyness to
become one of America’s greatest financiers. Across an unusually
diverse range of enterprises, from banking to oil to aluminum
manufacture, he would build a legendary personal fortune, tracking
America’s course to global economic supremacy. Personal happiness,
however, eluded him: his loveless marriage at forty-five to a British
girl less than half his age ended in a scandalous divorce, and for all
his best efforts, he would remain a stranger to his children. He had
been bred to do one thing, and that he did with brilliant and
innovative entrepreneurship. The Mellon way was to hold companies
closely, including such iconic enterprises as Alcoa and Gulf Oil.
Collecting art, a pursuit inspired by his close friend Henry Clay
Frick, would become his only nonprofessional gratification. And by the
end of his life, Mellon’s “pictures” would constitute one of the
world’s foremost private collections.

Good reading![]()
If you want to know the reasons and the background of the fall of
Barings bank, I recommend it. You will be surprised what were the
levels of control at that time in the most respectful bank in Europe
and in the world. Nowadays it’s really hard to imagine that one simple
back office manager could lead the whole bank giant into trashes. Good
reading and relaxing with a flair of adventure.
One of the best reads I’ve had in a long time![]()
The tale of Nick Leeson’s catastrophic trading that brought about
the collapse of Baring’s bank is perhaps the most famous scandal in
banking history. It is also an absolutely fascinating read. Although
the film version of the story is gripping and intense, nothing can
compare to the written word when portraying the terror, panic and inner
turmoil that Leeson went through as his 88888 account losses spun out
of control.

The Law and Business
Project finance is used to build projects such as large-scale energy,
infrastructure, toll roads, ethanol, and recycling projects, as well as
many others. Project finance requires careful analysis and structuring
of a wide variety of risks. This completely updated third edition
addresses these risks and their resolution, and details the necessary
elements of a successful project financing. Mirroring the structure of
an actual project finance deal, this all-in-one handbook examines each
step of the process.
the Federal Reserve, Volume 1
Allan H. Meltzer’s monumental history of the Federal Reserve System
tells the story of one of America’s most influential but least
understood public institutions. This first volume covers the period
from the Federal Reserve’s founding in 1913 through the
Treasury-Federal Reserve Accord of 1951, which marked the beginning of
a larger and greatly changed institution.
To understand why the
Federal Reserve acted as it did at key points in its history, Meltzer
draws on meeting minutes, correspondence, and other internal documents
(many made public only during the 1970s) to trace the reasoning behind
its policy decisions. He explains, for instance, why the Federal
Reserve remained passive throughout most of the economic decline that
led to the Great Depression, and how the Board’s actions helped to
produce the deep recession of 1937 and 1938. He also highlights the
impact on the institution of individuals such as Benjamin Strong,
governor of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in the 1920s, who
played a key role in the adoption of a more active monetary policy by
the Federal Reserve. Meltzer also examines the influence the Federal
Reserve has had on international affairs, from attempts to build a new
international financial system in the 1920s to the Bretton Woods
Agreement of 1944 that established the International Monetary Fund and
the World Bank, and the failure of the London Economic Conference of
1933.

Value Added Risk Management
A new perspective on risk management
Risk management has evolved to
address the more strategic issue of optimization of return on risk.
This has been accompanied by statistical, mathematical, and financial
techniques which-when actively applied-can aid an institution in
producing disproportionately high returns on risk. Adding Value Through
Risk Management aims to describe these techniques, illustrate their
application, and discuss their strategic value for financial
institutions.
David Belmont is Director of Group Risk Control for Nexgen Financial Solutions Group (NFS).
Very timely. Thoughtful presentation![]()
This book is a gem - very timely and well-thought out. David
Belmont obviously has a lot of experience in this area, but also has
put in a lot of thought-leadership into this book. He traces the Basel
II accord to its roots in M&M economics, and convincingly argues
why bank risk management is a critical function. He then traces a
thread from risk management to capital management and shows why and how
banks can make use of Basel implementations to achieve a high degree of
control and positioning of their operations.
The only knock on this
book is that I found several typos and simple editing errors - it is
clear that deadlines won over editorial quality. Hopefully the next
edition will be cleared up in this regard - nevertheless I highly
recommend this book.

So You Want to Be a Mortgage Broker
…![]()
Save yourself time and money - run a Google search to get info on
the subject. This book is worthless, the author mainly advertises their
websites.
Very Disappointed![]()
This book was extremely BASIC. Hardly any useful information at
all. If you have ever taken out a mortgage, you already know most of
this. It was almost a total waste of money. The main focus of this book
is to sell you a much more expensive program(s).
Going to enter the mortgage business![]()
I loved this book.
For someone who knows very little about the industry and wants to get into it, this book is a great place to start.
The last review said that this information can be found on the
internet. Maybe it is, BUT I doubt it. Anyway, I am not willing to
waste countless hours and search through hundreds of websites to try to
find it. Especially when the book is so cheap.

Structured Equity Derivatives
Although the pricing and hedging of derivatives contracts has been the
subject of a large number of books, hardly any books exist on the
actual design of derivatives contracts. Structured Equity Derivatives
fills this gap in a remarkable way. The book introduces an approach to
the structuring and practical application of derivatives that allows
the reader to create his own derivatives solutions to an endless
variety of problems. The approach is extremely natural - the only limit
is the reader’s own creativity.
Since it clearly explains
the reasons why derivatives exist and why there is such a large
variety, this is the book that should be read before picking up any
other book on the pricing and hedging of derivatives. As the book
concentrates on product design instead of pricing, there are no complex
pricing formulas or numerical procedures. The emphasis is on intuition
and common sense rather than complex formal results, which makes the
book accessible to people from many different backgrounds.

Aggressive Nationalism
McCulloch v. Maryland (1819) has long been recognized to be one of the
most significant decisions ever handed down by the United States
Supreme Court. Indeed, many scholars have argued it is the greatest
opinion handed down by the greatest Chief Justice, in which he declared
the act creating
the Second Bank of the United States constitutional
and Maryland’s attempt to tax it unconstitutional. Although it is now
recognized as the foundational statement for a strong and active
federal government, the immediate impact of the ruling was short-lived
and widely criticized.
Elegantly written, full of new information, and the first in-depth
examination of McCulloch v. Maryland, Aggressive Nationalism offers an
incisive, fresh interpretation of this familiar decision central to
understanding the shifting politics of the early republic as well as
the development of
federal-state relations, a source of constant division in American politics, past and present.

Funny Money
From esteemed New Yorker writer Mark Singer comes this cautionary tale
of the Penn Square Bank, the oil and gas broker in an Oklahoma City
shopping mall whose collapse in 1982 staggered America’s banking
industry. Recounting the whole spectacular story and its colorful
characters, Singer makes brilliantly (and hilariously) clear what
actually happened and why it had to happen in boom-time Oklahoma.
Nowhere else did money flow in quite the same spontaneous fashion. “[A]
tale of wonderful verve” (New York Times), Funny Money comes to life
through Singer’s vivid prose and continues to resonate in today’s
culture of corporate corruption.
so that’s what happened to the oil business![]()
Well written and enjoyable - not a easy thing for such a
potentially droll subject. Made a living shutting down oil companies
for a while - now I know why.
